Black Drum: These bruisers are the bulldogs of the bay. Known for their powerful runs and distinctive "croaking" sound, black drum can grow to over 30 pounds in these waters. They love hanging around structure and will put up a fight that'll have your arms burning. Spring is prime time for big black drum, but you can catch them year-round in Corpus Christi.
Sheepshead: Don't let those human-like teeth fool you - sheepshead are more than just a funny face. These striped battlers are known for their light bite and tasty fillets. They're structure-oriented fish, so we'll target them around jetties and pilings. Winter and early spring are peak seasons, but skilled anglers can find them year-round. Sheepshead require finesse and patience, making them a favorite challenge for many of our guests.
Redfish: The crown jewel of Texas inshore fishing, redfish (or red drum) are what bring many anglers to Corpus Christi. Fall is the prime season when big schools of bull reds cruise the flats, but you can catch quality fish year-round in the Laguna Madre.

Black Drum are the tough guys of our local waters. These big, powerful fish can weigh up to 90 pounds, though most we catch are in the 5-30 pound range. You'll find them hanging around oyster beds and muddy flats in the bays, often in pretty shallow water. They're bottom feeders with a taste for crabs and shellfish. Spring's the best time to target them, when they school up to spawn. That's when you can really get into some action. Black Drum put up a great fight and make some weird croaking sounds while you're reeling them in. The smaller ones under 15 pounds are good eating too - nice white meat with a mild flavor. If you want to land a big one, try using fresh crab for bait. Drum love it, and other fish tend to leave it alone. Just make sure you use enough weight to keep it on the bottom where these guys feed. Patience is key - they can be stubborn biters.
Redfish are a staple here in Corpus Christi. These copper-colored beauties with the distinctive tail spot usually run 28-33 inches when full grown, but can get much bigger offshore. They love shallow water - sometimes you'll even see their backs sticking out above the surface! Look for them around oyster reefs, grass flats, and mangroves in 1-4 feet of water. These fish are popular for good reason. They put up a great fight, especially in the shallows where they'll try to break you off in the structure. They're also excellent eating, with a mild, sweet flavor that's hard to beat. Fall's prime time for redfish as they school up before heading offshore to spawn. Try working a topwater lure across the flats early in the morning - there's nothing like seeing a big red explode on your bait. If they're being picky, a live shrimp under a popping cork is hard to beat.
Sheepshead are one of the quirkier fish we go after. They've got this funny-looking mouth full of human-like teeth that they use to crush barnacles and crabs. Most run 1-8 pounds, but the big ones can hit 20 pounds. You'll find them around any kind of structure - docks, bridge pilings, jetties - anywhere barnacles grow. These fish are a blast to catch, but they're tricky. They're notorious bait stealers, so you've got to be quick on the hook set. Spring's prime time when they school up to spawn. The fight's good, and they're excellent eating - sweet, white meat that's a local favorite. Here's a pro tip: if you're fishing from shore, try scraping some barnacles off the pilings. It creates a natural chum slick that'll draw the sheepshead right to you. Just check local regs first to make sure it's allowed.
